A First Sketch Manifesto
June 4, 2008
First Sketch
I played a piano piece once upstairs a desolate hotel, where I walked down a corridor adorned with intricate abstract pieces of art and sat down late in one night to play a piece never played again. I am a person, a single soul roaming this single rock of earth accumulating knowledge and experiences…how will the world accept such a simple yet intricate process? Well it isn’t my problem- I am a person- an adolescent nonetheless who will always retain the heart of a child…and so I sat to play a soft song…and what was to say of its structure, of its tempo changes and many chord change progressions? Nothing! I can only describe to you its passion- I can describe to you the pain and passion it takes to forget all which I can fathom behind a fret board or piano bench… – all those processes which happen in the brain…and yet it is still captured… no not on paper of through notes written but through this distinct essence of the mind. How else could I have been inspired to commit this pen to paper, these fingers to type? As people we retain the ability to express and remember. Let our technological advances be responsible for retaining these experiences.
I will expound upon this further dear reader. If we could revert back to the moonlit nights in Mozart’s den when he pounded away his passion on piano keys, or when Tchaikovsky became inspired with his symphonies then yes!, we can be grateful that their current technology and theory (parchment and music theory) allowed them to retain that essence…that essence of the mind that continues to exist to this day on youtube links and countless conductors in countless opera houses playing countless notes precisely as how they played hundreds of years ago…yes! Their legacy lives on! We live in the past!
…But life? What is say of my piano played nights in dark desolate hotel bars? Lost. Lost to humanity but still held in my mind. But what if I held a recorder in my hand? Or a frequency reader on the keys?
I fathom a future in which the moment…the music of the moment and the creation of a catharsis is of the utmost importance! We pertain to moment in time in which the peoples of this society are obsessed with documentation… take a picture!, record the speech!… Write it down! And yet with this emphasis of the moment we have, quite ironically, begun to live in the past through our emphasis of it.
A MANIFESTO ON MODERN DAY MUSIC
AND OUR CORPORATE CULTURE
We have banished the way of the Bard with pyrotechnics and high-class gimmicks. Men no longer place bets with beauty but rather gamble with greatness- they say, ¨Hey, lets place this much money on this such person and provide such and such music for the masses.¨ We have fabricated emotions. Music is no longer a fantasy but a function. We have progressed into a time of corporate creations and the individual has been lost like stale statues which whither in the wind…One hit wonders and fashionable fads soon to be forgotten. And it is we who have progressed from futurists, to surrealists, to existentialists and post-modern man to vehemently say: Fuck that. This is our manifesto on modern music and our evolved…or rather devolved corporate culture; we have banished the way of the bard and bastardized all the expressive mediums.
We must now begin to emphasis on the process of creation and revert to the roots of primordial man and discard the outcome: let it be known; it is not in our nature or necessity to declare any sort of document that declares our essence: our essence is of the only importance and it is our actions in the moment which matter most. We are not to be responsible for any results be it financial or formulaic. We must do away with recordings or any sort of capturings´- the importance and emphasis lays in the process and of creations. We must make a masterpiece and discard the canvas and acknowledge it for what it is: dust in the wind.
We must live! We must expose our subconscious sentiments, the heart of our essence and merge our spiritual side of life to the mundane materials. We must act as a collective and consciously create for the mere purpose of creating and do what the peoples of earth have been granted; the gift of expression. We must revolt against the norms and release the accumulated angst that has been building within. It is time the proletarian and Bourgeois societies stand to their callings and rebel against the most obvious and arrogant leaders. We must cease being a silent majority allowing for corruption. I am speaking of battling politics with philosophy.
Music must be improvised. Art sporadic and pertinent to the inner essence of man. Writing must be automatic being most accurate to ones state of mind. We must experiment and experience all that life has to offer. We must acknowledge that fact that life is a series of frequencies akin to strings and that we are as significant as we are insignificant. We are worms chewing on the corpses of men hoping to lay fertile ground for future generations. And greatness will only result in getting the fuck up and acting in accordance with our souls and singing, shouting if necessary to the music in our hearts. This is our manifesto and you have heard it. Do not apologize for your apathy- you are the only one responsible for your actions and you must act now.
Live. Love. Life. Create. Now
Forget the past, find faith in the now and
Find the future by creating it.
Insist on being inspired at all times wired to life.
Live simply
And simply live.

Music is no longer a fantasy but a function…. So why bother with it at all? If that is what music IS, than perhaps it is time to give up on the concept of music altogether and forge a new art form more apt to an economic culture that is based on marketing, not talent.
My question is what will the new art be. I think that, as an insider studying in a music conservatory, the state of what we think of as art and specifically music (as it is my specialty) is akin to a car running on fumes without hope of refueling, while us who desperatly love and depend on it get out of the car in increasing numbers and try to push. I dont mean that in a negative way, it is just an observation. What we think of as art, being defined in the disciplines of music, sculpture, literature, etc, seems to be increasingly denied by the premise of of our developing culture.
So my question is where can art go from here? Can we radically redefine what art might mean? Can the chairman of a board compose business deals like symphonies? Can a stock broker direct his subsidiaries walking the fine line between prosperity/genius and bankruptcy/rubbish like a ballet dancer dancing the Rite? Who can create the new art if not the movers of a culture, the cornerstones of its progress? Every human desires to create, who is to delimit the boundaries of what is “artistic” and what is not?
Great thoughts, and very well written, i’m glad to meet you.

No! No, no, no, NO!
Our perception of music has evolved, or like I said, DEvolved into this state of corporate creations and we have banished the way of the bard-
I am astonished at the way you ended that first paragraph!- the whole point of this manifesto was to move mankind away from the golden calf of financial inspiration and direct our attention to what is truly of the essence: essence in and of itself and the process of creation-
I know it is idealist, but the ability stands within each one of us and the point is to encourage an entire youth movement to turn thier heads to the glory that art retains-
i’m talking about reinstilling the inspiration of a communal and conscious catharsis and heading towards a more spiritual and less material route- and the time to act is now and oppurtune in our upcoming post-war era-
what will the new art be? this is a good question, I for one envision mass gatherings akin to woodstock, bonaroo, and the sort- gatherings where people get together for the soul sake of enjoying and experiancing life for what it is, not for what its worth-
Your car metaphor was fantastic and I completely agree- i believe with the evolution of music and innovators such as john cage are paving the way for the future.
It is my firm belief that the standard and classical music theory will be be done away with and replaced with a theory that places much more emphasis on accuracy in relation to frequencys (see house, trance, and new age music) while also placing importance on improvisation.
Music will become a new form of meditation and medicine (see music therapy)
Art will not be radically redifined in response to your other question but rather become acknolwedged in drastic forms- this has been evident within the recent art movements (futurism, nihilism, dada, surrealism)
Read my page, Soceitys Cock-a-roach to get a better grasp of what I am talking about here and, like you said, i am glad to have stumbled across your thoughts on the web-
it is only through associations such as this through likeminded artists that a conscious change of the way our generation perceives things and paves the way for future generations, i, however, am intended on doing as much as i can on bettering the now, for after all, isint that the only thing that truly exists?

Why is financial inspiration necessarily bad? Why is the creation of things for material gain less valuable than the creation of things for the sake of creation itself? What exactly would a more spiritual and less material future look like?
I idolized cage for years, but am coming to think that he is one behind the dead car pushing. His ideas transcend and point to a new way of thinking about the world – so why did he confine himself to musical creation? He could have got out of the car and started building a new one, but he kept pushing a lame-duck further and further from civilization.
I dont think we will do away with music. I think that the “art”, the creativity, inquiry, and innovation of the human spirit, will move on from the methods that used to define it – painting, singing, drawing, etc.

ZIMMERMUSIC, you BLIND FUCK!
open your eyes and see the atrocity that you support. this is an aphorism and an anathema to ART!
art, the expression of the soul, of the mind!
the vehicle and transmission of thoughts from each man to the other. zimmermusic. open your eyes. you wear your corporate tie, you play your six stringed guitar, you entertain. entertain what? the masses. entertain yourself, be ye. the soul wide open and free. because man, once you listen to civilization and shit, you start lifting up your dead car, and making a grave of it.

I’m not exactly sure what your criticism is…. If art is the vehicle of thoughts from each man to the other, what is the difference between art and language? Is your issue with the discussion of music and money. In that regard i find myself unable to discover suitable answers for the questions that I posed. I find myself believing that art created for profit by corporate conglomerations to be much less valuable to that created by the starving bohemian.
But I cant think of a reason why that is logically true. Who am I to decide that art is devoid of materialism? Who is anyone to decide that anything created for profit is not art? What else could it be? Must we qualify it as “commercial” art, or some other term? Who sets the boundary? And so i wonder if the spirit of art, which i think of as pure creation, has been shifting silently from the aesthetic to the practical. In what discipline is creation rewarded for its daring and industriousness?
I dont think it does in music. We are not judged solely on the culpability of our creations, but on our ability to spread those creations, to market ourselves, to place ourselves in a historic context. I see art to be much more about personal catharsis, pure courageous inquiry into the human condition. So my wondering is whether a medium that necessitates behavior contrary to the pure spirit of art is an able vehicle for its musings. And then, if music will not satisfy, and painting is unfulfilling, where can the artist turn for his medium?
The only answer could be in a medium that rewards honesty, industriousness and daring above all else. What could that be? That is my question and I would be interested to hear your or anyone’s answer.

John Cage never confined himself to music-
he was exposed to the essence of the universe-
CONSTANTLY.
Creation, art-
it is all for the purpose of continuing essence-
the essence of the soul?
of the mind?
of the self?
Human beings are inherently selfish as we are social-
Society opens its doors to the shaman
who can sing and dance the dreams of the then

LOGICALLY
1. Of, relating to, in accordance with, or of the nature of logic.
2. Based on earlier or otherwise known statements, events, or conditions; reasonable: Rain was a logical expectation, given the time of year.
3. Reasoning or capable of reasoning in a clear and consistent manner.
/Earliar and otherwise known statements of ‘time’, of our inhereited and evident past, present, and presumed future=LOGICALLY
THUS
it is logical that you cant see,

the
REASON
3. An underlying fact or cause that provides logical sense for a premise or occurrence
for the fact every face can fathom:

I read and reread your reply but cannot determine the criticisms that you have with mine. Your words are beautiful to read, you are a gifted poet. But I wonder if they are suited for philosophy. The inquiry that I would invite you to join is one not of WHAT, but of WHY. I not only want to know what music is, but why it is what it is. Perhaps you exist on a plane of insight where such a question is trivial, and if so I envy you. But I find myself on the plane of logic and non-contradiction. And in this plane I cannot find answers that harmonize with foundational long-held beliefs (which seem much in line with your words i might add).
So I question the premises that led to those beliefs, and would love to hear your insult-free opinions AND the reasons behind them to the following questions.
Must art be created by an individual without hope of material return for his efforts?
In other words: consider a britney spears smash hit and a Cage number piece. Which if either is art?
If both, then can we consider one of them more “artistic”? WHY?
If one and not the other how can we draw that distinction? Where is the line between art and non-art?
Is “art” qualified by a measure of intention, reaction, or reward,(or other…)? For any answer to this question, is there no exception you can think of that invalidates the scale? For any proposed measure of art, can we not apply that standard to things which art not considered “artistic”, (marketing, banking, bowling, etc).
Those are my questions. I would greatly appreciate your or anyone’s opinion on them.
by the way, do you have a blog or web site, i’d like to read it if so. my website is zimmermusic.com

Music is the what, the why, the where, the when, the wednesday and next thursday, the past paycheck and the late elexctricity bill, its the sound of the bulls running in the south of spain and just sittin still out in a field somewheres where not no man can hear him snort- music is all this, it is all around us thats why 4 33 is so captivating, because it questions the meaning behind life and our definitions.
for a certain time, music couldn’t be adequately applied to every and all situations because thier wasnt a guitar player, and a rock band wasnt a rock band unless they had a bass player and played in a four four measure, but listen how the times have changed and the brain is coping with these changes…
and its mainly a change in our perception, language, and metaphors- but before we had this ton of crap we call words and knowledge aand basically alotta nonsense to describe the world their were the greeks and even before that siberian shamans who served as medicine men and communicated between the spiritual natural world and the physical world-
art isint somethign that MUST BE CREATED- marcel duchamp showed us that art is art in the sense that even yo tomatoe ketchup sittin next to ya computer screens a work of art/ and do you get any matierial return for that caan aaah whatchu fuckin care bout finances when you just got faith in the world and your heart and souul>
i walk down the street playing my feet shufflin them one and one and one and four is five and well whaddya know im here and home and happy and thats that man not much of an explanation but art isint qualified by a measure of intention, reaction, or reward, art is qualified by the quality of your life and the way you live it.
an artist is just a guy who can apply green paint to a canvas and convince the consumers who are too apathetic to actually paint themselves and have enough paper and are pleased with that art, thier art of finance and workmenship going to dat cubicle and living life LIKE DAT/
well i dont do that all day and maybe you wont either cause we can play music and when i play music like when i write (which is music) and when you read dis youll think damn dats music and whys he writing like hes five and ill say cause i got rythm and flow and i wanna express to you an idea of life love and existence and commitment and cultivating essence
what is NOT considered artistic you ask?
art is way of perceiving things
art is everywhere and has always been around
art is what ya got in your mind and when you make music you make magic and you dont got to be no mystic to know dat
